the Valente court ruling

COURT FILE NO.: CV-22-717 DATE: 2023-01-27

    • Court Decision - Victoria/Weber Encampment (Info Page)
“I am not satisfied that the Region has adequate capacity to shelter the approximately 50 encampment residents given that its shelters are not low barrier or truly accessible,” Valente wrote.

“Just as the British Columbia cases have found … so too do I conclude that the ability to provide adequate shelter for oneself is a necessity of life that falls within the right to life protected by Section 7 of the Charter.”

Unsheltered Campaign:
Unsheltered Pledge & 2022 Candidate Town hall

On October 17, 2022 Unsheltered Campaign hosted a town hall open to all candidates.
In addition to the town hall, Unsheltered Campaign also invited all candidates to pledge to three key commitments to housing, as part of their election platforms.

the pledge

1. I pledge to approach housing and homelessness from a human rights-based perspective: Housing is a human right.

2. I pledge to fight for the rights of unsheltered residents by urging Waterloo Regional Council to end their lawsuit against residents and others involved in the 100 Victoria St. encampment.

3. I pledge to urge Waterloo Regional Council to approve the sanctioning of all encampments on Regional land as an interim measure to keep unsheltered residents safer while they await permanent housing.

A human rights based
approach to encampments

Picture
The Region of Waterloo has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to a human rights approach. This has come up in many forms—through staff commentary, council meetings, official documents, and legislation… everywhere!

But what does that actually mean? (<<< This seems to frequently be a question - and a missing "link"!)

Rather than diving too deeply into the details here, I’d like to point you toward a few key readings that can guide you on your own exploration. Throughout my ongoing ramblings, I’ll likely refer back to this approach frequently and cite specific components from various documents—but I’ll always do my best to clearly identify which document (and part) I’m referencing in those moments.
