I was privileged the chance to attend the national homelessness conference in Montreal this year — a rare opportunity to explore these important topics and a moment away from the norms. Yet the disparity between the environment I was in and the realities we were there to address felt unmistakable the moment I received a text from a Waterloo Region encampment resident letting me know that an eviction was underway in Cambridge - at their home. With so many of our local support workers attending the conference alongside me, it was deeply concerning to think that such an action would proceed at a time when our essential local supports were significantly reduced, leaving those who remained carrying even more than usual. That one message so quickly brought the realities being discussed into sharp focus for me.

As I sat in a setting of comfort and privilege, with excellent food and service, and an incredible view, the economic gaps, the differences in lived experience, and the immediacy of people’s crises all stood in stark contrast to where I was. Returning home and witnessing the chaos that followed deepened this feeling, reinforcing not just how wide the divide can be but also how deep it really is right now.

Louder, for those of you in the back...
There are no shelter options right now!
Although the Mayor of Cambridge indicated during the September 23rd Cambridge council meeting that shelter beds were readily available, from what I can tell this claim is inaccurate and does not reflect the current realities our local housing support system is encountering.
More Cambridge Encampment Evictions
And Always more questions... #FOI Anyone?
2 days, 3 evictions...
Forcing people to leave an encampment site when there are no permanent housing options available, and no emergency shelter spaces available, is a violation of peoples human rights, specifically Section 7 of the Charter, which safeguards the right to life.
