  • Why are encampments a human rights issue?
  • How can we address encampments in a manner consistent with respect for human rights?

Dear City of Cambridge (CC: Region of Waterloo):

I "Rescind" Nothing: Check Your Facts
My post 23/09/25 cambridge Council Meeting ponderings

In the September 23, 2025, City of Cambridge meeting, so many moments felt akin to something from "The Twilight Zone" or "Saturday Night Live". What should have been a serious discussion about accountability and human impact instead played out as a strange mix of denial, deflection, and scripted absurdity. Watching it, at times I could hardly tell whether to laugh, cry, or question reality itself.

This should have been an opportunity to move forward constructively—to rebuild trust, acknowledge harm, and chart a more humane path—but that moment was lost, that chance denied. Why?

City of Cambridge initiating Encampment evictions *during extreme heatwave*

Notices issued June 20, 2025

These individuals, already failed by our flawed social infrastructures, now face further danger due to their forced displacement and increased exposure to the elements. Stripping away their personal efforts and ability to maintain even the most basic form of shelter amidst an overwhelming housing crisis at all - let alone during an extreme weather event - is not only deeply unjust, but a clear violation of their rights.

What this says of our own lacking humanity really frightens me... We should probably talk about this.

RE: Cambridge Encampment Evictions - Heat Wave June 2025

Today, during a heatwave, Cambridge bylaw and police used heavy machinery to throw out 4 unhoused peoples personal belongings. With no suitable shelter options, they face serious health risks. Evictions should be paused during extreme weather. Learn a better way: homelesshub.ca/book/office-...
