"Who we are:
The climate crisis is here, and as youth under 35, we are affected more than any generation before us. As the largest voting bloc for the first time in Canadian history, we also have a huge opportunity. For decades, fossil fuel billionaires and their political allies have put people and the planet in jeopardy. Last fall, scientists confirmed we only have until 2030 to cut our emissions in half to avoid catastrophic climate change. Their time is over. The 2019 election is Our Time.
Across the country, young people are rising up to demand meaningful climate action. We need a large-scale, comprehensive solution based on the best available science that is rooted in Indigenous sovereignty, creates millions of good, sustainable jobs, and addresses the social inequality at the centre of this crisis. We need a Green New Deal for Canada, and we need it now.
Supported by 350.org and inspired by the Sunrise Movement in the US, Our Time is a nation-wide movement that is mobilizing youth to elect Green New Deal champions on October 21. We do this through direct action, electoral organizing, solidarity work, and creative storytelling.
In July, Our Time Kitchener-Waterloo participated in a national Day of Action to call on the CBC to host a climate-themed leaders debate (https://tinyurl.com/y6kcr9yq). We were inspired by the enthusiasm of the young people who showed up to make change. Now, it’s our time to organize across the KW area to build a massive local network of young people who will create the future we need. We can’t wait to get moving. Join us. Together, we will fight to win a Green New Deal for all. https://our-time.ca/
Our organizing takes place on stolen land that is the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and the Neutral Peoples who have lived on and cared for this land for thousands of years. Today, it is home to diverse Indigenous people from across Turtle Island. Kitchener-Waterloo is located on the Haldimand tract, land which was promised to the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) confederacy. To this day, less than 5% of what was promised is still Indigenous land. Those of us who are settlers in this movement (i.e. who arrived here as a result of a choice) are grateful for the opportunity to live and organize here, and must work continuously towards decolonization - both within ourselves, and the world around us. This includes recognizing the inherent anti-Indigenous racism that is tied to the exploitation of the Earth, and working towards climate justice and a Green New Deal that is based on Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination."
