Pride is a Protest

Pride has always been and will always be political. As an IndigiQueer organization we understand very closely the links between anti-colonial struggle and queer rights. We recognize that the forces which have green-lit the colonization of our land, massacred our people and genocided our elders are the same ones used to uphold the heteronormative values oppressing our queer youth.

This pride, like every pride, is a protest against these forces, not a parade. Until every colonial state has been dismantled, every oppressed person liberated and every injustice prosecuted, pride will continue to remain a protest.

In Cambridge, Ontario, during the Pride flag-raising event on June 1st, 2026, a 17-year-old non-binary youth, Sophie Mills, was silenced by Mayor Jan Liggett when they tried to speak about past experiences of discrimination. The mayor took over the mic - an act of censorship in a space offered to bring voice and community. The incident offers us a stark example of the gap between inclusion, rhetoric, and real lived experience.
